Tiger Woods will make final call on playing Presidents Cup

U.S. team’s Captain Tiger Woods will have a consultation with his players and assistants, but the decision on whether he will be playing in the Presidents Cup will be totally his call.

Woods was unsuccessful to make the team as one of the top eight automatic qualifiers for the 2019 Presidents Cup that will be held at Royal Melbourne in Australia on Dec 9-15, but the experienced golfer still has four captains picks up his sleeve.

Eight automatic qualifiers for the International Presidents Cup team

Those who have finished outside the top 30 in the FedExCup weren’t the only ones that were left dejected at the BMW Championship at Medinah.

Tony Finau required a solo third or better to qualify for the U.S. Presidents Cup Team that will play against the Internationals at Royal Melbourne from Dec 9-15. But with a final-round 69, he was over taken by Hideki Matsuyama (63) for the third place. With his solo fourth, Tony Finau was on the edge looking in and will need a hand from the U.S. team Captain Tiger Woods.

The top eight qualifiers for the International Team that will play the 2019 Presidents Cup have been decided and Ernie Els will be the captain. He will lead a team that comprises of four players with a total of 17 appearances previously. And four others who will be making their debut.

The top eight qualifiers for the U.S. Team that will play the 2019 Presidents Cup have been decided and Tiger Woods will be the captain. He will lead a team that comprises of players positioned in the top 20 in the Official World Golf ranking. The team has a combined 11 wins in the PGA tour.

Final opportunity for Day and Woodland to earn automatic spots in the Presidents Cup.

Neither Jason Day nor Gary Woodland want to be satisfied for being the captain’s picks on their respective teams in the Presidents Cup. Yet the truth is that: it appears both the golfers will remain on the outside and will look in when the eight automatic spots for the International and U.S. teams will be announced on Sunday night. Unless they can go low in the final round of the BMW Championship.

At the beginning of the week, both Woodland and Day were ranked ninth in the points. Woodland was about 350 points adrift the No. 8 Patrick Cantlay in the U.S. rankings. The rankings are based on the FedExCup points calculation. The Australian Day was just four points in arrears to the Chinese Taipei golfer C.T. Pan in the International rankings that are based on world rankings.

It’s his worst round since shooting a 63rd hole in the final round of the Shriners Hospitals for the Children Open in November last year. It was also outdone the 65th hole he shot in the second round at the Pebble Beach in June earlier this year. This shot puts him for his weekend run to the U.S. Open title.

Woodland has made four appearances, and missed two cuts. After his Wife Gabby gave birth to their twin girls earlier this month, it was tough emotionally for woodland. But he did manage to find his groove in the second round at Liberty National. He made the cut by shooting 4 under par in his final nine holes that Friday.
